This striking and dynamic sculpture depicts Zhenwu (Xuanwu), the powerful Taoist deity known as the Perfected Warrior, also revered as the Dark Emperor of the North.
The figure stands in a commanding martial pose upon the mythical Black Tortoise, entwined with a serpent—symbols of longevity and the north. He is dressed in intricately detailed armor and flowing robes, vividly hand-painted in vibrant hues of blue, green, and red, accented with bright gold gilding.
He holds a sword in his right hand and forms a mudra with his left. The piece rests on a rectangular base with an impressed inscription. This colorful and expressive statue is a magnificent statement piece for a curated collection of Asian art or a distinctive accent in a designed interior.
