Angels are often imagined as ancient souls, and a little worn by the ages; these three are set in vintage frames accordingly. The poses come from the life class: a model perched on a studio stool, another standing seen from behind with her hands clasped, and a third leaning forward with her hands on her knees. Each figure is given a pair of great white wings, built up in pale washes of blue, violet and gray. The figures are drawn with economy and assurance in watercolor with red-orange colored pencil contours on heavy cold-press watercolor paper, and the faces and hands are resolved in a few quick strokes. Each sheet is signed “B. Hull” in red-orange at the lower right or lower center, with its deckled edges left visible within the mat. The watercolors date to the late 20th century.
The set was rematted with conservation mats in dusty rose, teal and mauve over white. Note, the mauve mat has a slight texture, while the others are plain. Other matting differences are shown in the images. All three were re-glazed with Tru Vue Conservation Clear glass, which filters 99 percent of UV light. The three identical wood frames have a worn gold finish. They originally held prints after Gainsborough’s Blue Boy and Lawrence’s Pinkie, with a Vilas Mages Co., Chicago, label dating from the 1910s to the 1920s, and their age suits the subject. The sight size of each watercolor varies, but frames are identical.

The watercolors are in good condition with no tears, foxing or fading. Light cockling consistent with heavy washes is normal for the medium. The mats and glazing are new. The frames show substantial wear to the gold finish, with rubbing and small losses along the edges and corners, most noticeably on the frame with the rose mat. This wear is part of the presentation and has not been touched up. less
