An exquisite late-19th century to early 20th century antique British maritime oil painting on canvas panel depicting a serene coastal scene of Oban Bay, Scotland. The composition features a meticulously rendered steam drifter and sailing yacht navigating the Firth of Lorn, set against the rolling highland peaks of Kerrera or Mull under a beautifully muted Victorian sky. Gulls crest the waves over a craggy, dark rock formation in the foreground.
The piece is prominently signed "HERBERT" in the lower left corner and inscribed "Oban, Scotland" in elegant cursive script in the lower right.
The reverse retains its highly collectible, original hand-stenciled artist colorist stamp: "A. R. Knight, 349, Edgware Road, W." This places the canvas preparation firmly in London's historic West End art district during the peak of the late Victorian/Edwardian era.
Housed in its substantial, deep-cove antique gesso and gilt wood frame featuring a beautiful inner beaded slip and a repeating foliate motif along the outer border.

Condition Notes:
Excellent structural integrity and age-appropriate wear. The oil on canvas panel remains stable with faint, beautiful craquelure in the deeper tones. The antique gesso and gilt wood frame shows a stunning, authentic aged patina and gentle luster. Consistent with age and use, there are minor bumps, chips, and small losses to the fragile gesso on the outer corners and edge (as pictured), which do not detract from its historic charm or museum-quality presentation.
