This is an elegant, vintage rectangular tray, crafted from Zitan wood (purple sandalwood) and decorated with delicate mother-of-pearl (nacre) inlay.
The tray features a dark, rich brown-black wood grain with a smooth, lustrous finish. The raised edges are carved to resemble bamboo stalks with distinct nodes, and the corners are gently rounded. The center of the tray is adorned with a colorful, intricately cut shell inlay scene depicting the classic Chinese motif "Magpie on Plum" (Xique Deng Mei), symbolizing joy and good fortune. The scene features two magpies perched on a flowering plum branch, alongside a stylized red sun and decorative rockery elements.
This piece beautifully combines traditional Chinese woodcraft with delicate shell inlay, making it a perfect serving tray for tea or small items, or a striking decorative display piece.
