This is a substantial, finely crafted vintage wooden tray, made from rosewood (huali wood) with a rich, dark reddish-brown patina.
The tray features a raised, gallery edge with a scalloped, undulating profile. The side panels are deeply carved with traditional geometric "Greek key" (meander) and stylized ruyi cloud motifs. The flat interior surface showcases the wood's natural "ox hair" (niu mao wen) grain pattern, which is highly visible and prized in this type of wood. The piece rests on a stepped, carved base with small bracket feet.
The wood has a smooth, lustrous, and "warm" feel (baojang) that develops with age and handling. Traditionally used as a tea tray, a base for a vase or scholar's rock, or a decorative catchall, this versatile piece is perfect for display on a console table or desk.
