Victorian Framed Hand Painted Tintype Portrait for your consideration. The framed portrait measures approx. 11 1/2 inches X 13 1/2 inches and approx. 2 inches deep. Back opening measures approx. 8 1/8 inches X 10 1/8 inches. Visible image size (mat opening) measures approx. 4 1/2 inches X 6 1/2 inches. American, Folk Art, 19th Century. Whole Plate, ferrotype, hand painted portrait, mustached gentlemen in tailored suit. The artistry on this piece is exceptionally fine. Rather than a heavy or crude overpainting, the artist utilized a delicate hand to render the clothing textures and facial tones, completing the portrait with tiny, meticulous applications of genuine metallic gold paint to highlight the gentleman's waistcoat buttons and pocket watch chain.
The portrait is housed in its gorgeous, original deep-well ogee molded walnut frame featuring a beautiful gilded inner liner, creating a striking "shadow-box" effect that offers immense character and wall presence.
This piece is in excellent antique condition and has been thoughtfully conserved for future preservation:
• The Frame: The original walnut frame is structurally sound with a gorgeous, naturally aged patina. Minor age-appropriate surface wear, scuffs, and oxidation to the wood and gilt liner as expected with an authentic 140-year-old piece.
• The Image: The hand-painted surface remains remarkably crisp with strong color retention and excellent clarity. Under close, angled inspection, there is a very faint, stable crease/bend to the thin iron plate near the lower vest area. It presents well when hung on a wall and does not affect the paint stability.
• Archival Preservation: The portrait is safely under glass and has been newly upgraded with a custom, acid-free archival mat and backing to prevent deterioration, ensuring this piece remains perfectly preserved for decades to come.
