Players (two) belongs to a group of ceramic figures in which rounded, headlike forms extend directly into elongated forearms and carefully articulated hands. Carlson removes conventional facial and bodily features, concentrating expression in gesture and physical contact. Hands reach, hover, overlap, and meet, creating relationships between otherwise isolated forms. The warm, speckled clay surface and simplified anatomy give the figures a simultaneously bodily and unfamiliar presence, while their arrangement turns gesture into the primary means of interaction.
