A bronze-olive field with the faint sheen of old metal is crossed by evenly spaced vertical lines and a broad horizontal band that divides the sheet below its center. Pairs of fine yellow-gold lines run along the band, and small raised outlines of folded, cut shapes appear above and below, drawn in the same gold. At the left edge a set of concentric arcs just enters the frame. Garcia made this in 2023 among her Echo works, in which stitching and forms are allowed to stay imperfect on purpose. The surface is calm and tightly structured, and rewards looking from near and far.
A grounded, architectural piece for a study, a dining room or a living room with deep greens, tobacco browns and warm woods. Olive and bronze pair well with walnut, aged brass, leather and cream plaster, and the vertical format fits above a console, a desk or beside a bookcase. It brings steady, low-key weight to a wall without competing with books or lamps nearby.
Mixed media on paper, 18 x 24 x 0.1 in (45.7 x 61 x 0.3 cm). Unframed.
In her recent work Garcia treats the mixing, prepping and refining of her materials as part of the art itself. These sheets are built up in layers, then marked by hand with fine lines, stitching or pressed and cut shapes that she leaves imperfect on purpose. She works without a plan for the finished piece, and the surfaces hold layers of experience more than any subject. The work is on paper and unframed.
Terese Garcia is a non-representational, experimental artist born in Hollywood, California, with family roots in Los Angeles County. She holds a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and studied fine art at Otis Parsons School of Art and Design in Los Angeles. She also studied stone carving early on, and she is a published poet.
Based on the Monterey Peninsula and a member of Open Ground Studios in Seaside, Garcia has exhibited across California and in New York, with solo shows at the Pacific Grove Art Center and in Sacramento, and was awarded a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2010. Her work is held in collections nationally. Her process is intuitive and layered, built from improvised color and marks rather than a plan.
