Dark iridescent glass with purple and gold fire, pressed in a hobstar and star-medallion pattern with arched panels, a scalloped rim, and a tall stem on a scalloped foot. The base is signed with Imperial's overlapping IG mark, introduced in 1951 — this is one of Imperial's 1960s carnival-glass revival pieces, reissuing the glow of the classic era. Measures 8 inches tall with a 6.5 inch bowl. Very good vintage condition; no chips or cracks observed. A striking centerpiece or candy compote.

A little history: Imperial Glass of Bellaire, Ohio was one of the original carnival glass makers of the 1900s-1920s, when iridescent pressed glass — sprayed with metallic salts while still hot, so the rainbow sheen is fired into the surface rather than painted on — gave ordinary households the sparkle of cut crystal for pennies. Imperial brought carnival glass back in the 1960s, reissuing its classic patterns in a smoky glass it advertised in 1966 as 'Peacock Blue' — collectors today simply call it Smoke. The overlapping IG mark on the base (Imperial's mark from 1951) is how you know this compote is a 1960s revival piece rather than a century-old original. See less
