An exceptional, documented one-of-a-kind original bronze sculpture titled Reclining Woman #1 by acclaimed Georgia artist, sculptor, and educator Jean Williams (1923–2022). Hand-sculpted in clay from a live nude model at the historic DeKalb Art Center, this piece was cast via the traditional lost-wax (cire perdue) method. As a direct cast of the artist's original clay study rather than an editioned run, it is an entirely unique, singular work. The sculpture captures expressive modernist contours, textural richness, and organic presence characteristic of post-war American figurative sculpture, presented on its original custom wooden display base.
About the Artist:
Jean Williams was a prominent Atlanta-area artist and University of Georgia Professor Emerita. She completed her studies at Valdosta State and the University of Georgia, held fellowships at Harvard University and the University of Rome (Fulbright Fellow), and honed her focus on bronze sculpture following UGA’s 1977 Cortona, Italy program. In 1983, Williams received the Georgia Governor’s Award in the Arts and was selected to create the official presentation bronze for that honor. Her notable commissions include the memorial angel for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, and her work is represented in the Georgia State Art Collection as well as regional public institutions.
Provenance & Inscriptions:
The bronze is incised by the artist with her signature, "BRONZE", and "UNIQUE." It is accompanied by complete original provenance: the artist's signed letter of authenticity detailing the piece's history, model study, and direct casting process.
