Trees cut out against a graded sky reached European decorators through Japanese woodblock prints and became a defining Art Nouveau motif. Marseille’s faience painters carried it into the interwar years and gave it a southern light. The painting here closely matches signed pieces from the Faïencerie de Saint-Jean-du-Désert, which revived the city’s centuries-old faience trade from 1921 until 1959. Neither base is marked, so we offer the pair as work in that factory’s manner rather than as signed production.
