Sculptural ceiling lamp, model “Saturn,” designed by Kazuo Motozawa for Staff Leuchten in Germany in 1972.
This piece is a prime example of early 1970s Space Age lighting. Its shade is formed by a succession of concentric rings of chromed metal arranged vertically, creating a semi-spherical volume with a strong sculptural presence.
The overlapping of the different elements produces an attractive interplay of reflections and depth, visually evoking the orbital rings of Saturn, from which the model derives its name.
The composition is completed by a circular top cover and chromed suspension elements that reinforce the technical and futuristic character of the piece. The polished metal surface interacts with the light and accentuates the geometric precision of its construction.
The design perfectly reflects the experimental spirit of European lighting in the early 1970s, when industrial materials, repetitive forms, and a fascination with space exploration gave rise to some of the most recognizable designs of the period.
Kazuo Motozawa developed a significant career specializing in lighting, while Staff Leuchten was one of the most prominent German manufacturers of postwar lighting design.
