In this contemporary beadwork text piece by Joshua Tree artist Panda Landa, two lines of blocky capital letters in charcoal read THERE IS TIME and THERE IS SPACE across a panel of dusty mauve-gray beads, the rows slightly wavy so the panel moves like a length of woven ribbon. The beads are matte and softly pink-gray, the letters dark and plain, with a strong, nearly pixel-like geometry. The sentence is simple and generous, a reassurance in two lines. Panda Landa, who makes textile works from second-hand, hand-dyed cloth, brings the same unfussy tenderness to this smaller, quieter form, a panel built bead by bead and set against natural linen inside a white box frame. The wide, shallow format measures fifteen by seven inches.
A narrow, wide-format piece for above a desk, a bed, a bookshelf or a console. The mauve-gray and charcoal blend with white walls, pale oak, gray linen and black metal, and the message reads as a calm reminder in a home office, a bedroom or a hallway. The white frame brightens a darker wall and fits easily into a gallery wall or a stacked pair.
Beads, 15 x 7 x 1.75 in (38.1 x 17.8 x 4.4 cm). Framed in white, mounted against natural linen.
These panels are made of tiny beads built up in tight horizontal rows, with each letter formed by changing the bead color from row to row. The finished rectangle is slightly irregular at its edges, a soft, handmade shape rather than a rigid one, and it is mounted against natural linen inside a white box frame. The wording is short and personal, set in blocky, grid-like lettering that echoes pixels, stitches and early screen type.
Panda Landa (b. 1982) is a queer, non-binary visual artist and filmmaker raised in the Nevada desert and now based in Joshua Tree, California. Self-taught, they work through instinct and improvisation, making mixed-media textile pieces from second-hand fabrics that are dyed by hand, stitched and stretched over frames. Sustainability is central to the practice, and every cloth arrives with its own history.
Their ongoing series, including PORTAL, ALTAR, ECLIPSE, VESSEL and RITUAL, touch on queerness, identity, ancestral narrative, healing and transformation, and more recent beaded panels carry short, tender phrases in color. Landa made the 2022 film In the Middle of Everywhere and has offered a workshop on giving new life to clothes at the Joshua Tree Music Festival.
