Gabe Perillo (1944–2013)
Tony Zale vs. Rocky Graziano II
Original pen and ink drawing by renowned sports artist Gabe Perillo, capturing the legendary 1947 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year: Tony Zale vs. Rocky Graziano II.
Held on July 16, 1947, in brutal Chicago heat reaching over 100 degrees, this brutal rematch became one of the greatest title fights in boxing history. Graziano was beaten severely and trailing on all scorecards for five straight rounds. In a dramatic turn of events in the 6th round, Graziano launched a ferocious assault, knocked Zale out, and captured the Middleweight Championship. The fight took such a devastating physical toll that both fighters were hospitalized immediately afterward.
Beautifully rendered with incredible detail and dynamic expression. Framed and matted (23x29 inches). Signed by artist Gabe Perillo. Very good vintage condition with minor signs of age on the frame.
I currently have a second, companion original ink artwork by Gabe Perillo It depicts the legendary Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay). Both pieces were sourced together and feature matching vintage gallery frames. They make a spectacular pair for display.
