Henner was a master of academic art who heavily utilized chiaroscuro and muted tones. He frequently painted his models in a distinctive, sharp profile view. The rapid, expressive paint application visible on the woman's face, captures the raw character and spirit of the subject. Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905) was an influential French Academic painter. His paintings are displayed globally at world-renowned museums, including the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and others. Henner almost always signed his completed works in the lower left or lower right corner using distinct red paint.
The painting is in good condition and it is housed in a period wood frame.
