Each bust is finely modeled and richly hand painted in the traditional Rouen palette of cobalt blue, green, ochre and yellow, with intricate floral decoration and classical detailing.

Summer is depicted as a graceful female figure wearing a floral patterned gown draped across her shoulders, with a garland of wheat and flowers adorning her hair. Winter is represented by a distinguished bearded male figure enveloped in richly decorated robes, with a hood framing his face and a contrasting yellow mantle across one shoulder.

The accompanying faience wall brackets are equally elaborate, featuring sculptural masks, scrolling ornament, architectural detailing and finely painted decorative reserves. Their coordinating decoration creates a unified architectural presentation for the two busts.

The figures reflect the French tradition of representing the Four Seasons through allegorical sculpture, combining classical subjects with the distinctive craftsmanship and colorful ornamentation of Rouen faience. France, circa 1860.
