An early 20th century oil painting of a red fox, crouching low in a grassy setting in the style of realist European animalier school, such as that of the most famous female painter during the 19th century, Rosa Bonheur. The painting is on canvas and set inside an ornate wooden frame with gold gilt. There is an artist signature in the left, lower corner of the painting and can be seen in the accompanying photographs but the signature is unclear.
The back of the painting shows an antique framer's and gilder's paper trade label and bearing the name J. Castaing located at 1, rue Rolland, Bordeaux, France. Based on the graphic elements of the label, the frame dates from the late 19th century to early 20th century. The original painting of this same title (A Study of a Fox by Rosa Bonheur) is housed in the collection of the Musee des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux.
As this painting matches the style of the original Rosa Bonheur and features a framing label from an old workshop just blocks away from that museum, it may be considered a high-quality period study or direct homage inspired by the Bordeaux school's celebration of her work. This specific period study was sourced directly from an antique market in the city of Bordeaux.

The front remains very appealing with vibrant colors and clear details showing only minor normal surface wear consistent with age. The reverse side suggests minor repairs or reinforcements. These interventions are confined to the back and do not detract from the primary image and the piece is ready for display. less
