It covers the empire from lapland and the white sea to the black sea, the crimea and the caucasus, and from the baltic and finland to the ural mountains, with sweden, prussia, austria and the turkish lands at the edges. The governments are outlined in color, with a pale blue wash along the coasts, and the urals and the caucasus are engraved in hachures. Below the title the plate reads "published under the superintendence of the society for the diffusion of useful knowledge". Scales of "english miles 69.15 = 1 degree" and "russian versts 104.3 = 1 degree" run up the right margin, where "khiva" is also lettered beyond the border. Below the lower left corner a key shows the symbol for "railways". Below the border is the imprint "london, edward stanford 6 charing cross.", with the plate number "15" outside the lower right corner. The plate comes from the harrow atlas of modern geography, published in london in 1858 by edward stanford of 6 charing cross and sold at harrow by crossley and clarke, booksellers to harrow school. Its maps were selected from those of the society for the diffusion of useful knowledge, founded in london in 1826, which issued its series of maps in parts from 1829 until the society was wound up in 1848. Edward stanford later issued the maps under his own imprint, as this sheet shows. In bessarabia the map marks a boundary lettered "l. Bourna sola boundary of russia by treaty of paris 1856.", and the plate is lettered with the date 1856 on that line. Sevastopol and balaklava are named in the crimea, and a railway runs from st. Petersburg to moscow. The map works as a single sheet record of the russian empire in europe as drawn after the treaty. Condition: light wear to the bottom right corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. A center fold, as issued. Small light flecks in the image, otherwise clean. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed. See less
