The title reads simply "greece". The map covers the kingdom from the gulf of arta and the gulf of volo in the north down past libadia, thibai and athens through the morea to cape matapan, cape malea and the island of kerigo. To the left are the ionian islands, among them sta. Maura, thiaki or ithaca, kephalonia and zante. To the right are negropont, skyro, skopelo and skiathos, and the western cyclades from zea, thermia and syra down to serpho, siphanto, milo and polikandro. The greek mainland and islands are outlined in yellow; the ionian islands, kerigo and a few small islands off the southwest coast, among them sapienza and strophadia, are outlined in red. Below the title are the lines "published under the superintendence of the society for the diffusion of useful knowledge" and a short key: "m. Mountain. P. Port. Pt. Point. R. River. Ru. Ruin." a scale in the left margin reads "english miles 69,1 = 1 degree". The plate number 17 is engraved above the upper right corner, the imprint "london, edward stanford, 6, charing cross." runs below the lower border, and the line "engraved by j. & c. Walker." sits at the lower right. The plate comes from the harrow atlas of modern geography, published by edward stanford in london in 1858 and sold at harrow by crossley and clarke, booksellers to harrow school. Its maps were selected from the series of the society for the diffusion of useful knowledge, founded in london in 1826, which issued its maps in parts from 1829 and was wound up in 1848; stanford later issued them under his own imprint. The map shows the kingdom of greece with its northern frontier running from the gulf of arta to the gulf of volo, and colors the ionian islands in red, apart from the yellow of the kingdom; they then stood under british protection. Condition: light wear to the bottom left corner; minor nicks to the bottom edge. Age toning, darker at the edges; edge soiling and scattered foxing in the margins. A center fold, as issued. Light flecks in the image. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
