A vintage italian sapporo two-seater sofa in walnut and original cream-beige upholstery, designed by mario marenco for mobil girgi and produced in italy during the 1970s. A particularly warm example of 1970s italian design, combining a sculptural exposed wooden frame with generously upholstered loose cushions and compact two-seat proportions.
designer: mario marenco
maker: mobil girgi
model: sapporo
origin: italy
period: 1970s
style: italian modern / mid-century modern / organic modern
materials: walnut wood, original textured upholstery, padding
dimensions: 151 w × 87 d × 82 h cm (59.4 w × 34.3 d × 32.3 h in)
seat height: 48 cm (18.9 in)
marked: yes, stamped “mobil girgi” to the inner wooden frame
the design balances a substantial wooden structure with unusually soft, relaxed upholstery. Broad rounded side panels form the front legs and visually frame the cushions, while a gently curved exposed rear rail gives the sofa an architectural profile from every angle. Six loose cushions create the characteristic layered sapporo silhouette, finished here in the original finely ribbed cream and beige textile. The contrast between warm walnut and pale upholstery gives the piece a quiet, tactile presence, while the compact width makes this two-seater especially appealing.
mario marenco was an italian architect and designer whose furniture from the late 1960s and 1970s often explored the relationship between generous upholstered volumes and clearly expressed structural frames. The sapporo line for mobil girgi included seating and complementary furniture in walnut and with the same rounded, exposed timber language.
condition
good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The original upholstery remains well preserved, with gentle age-related wear and slight softening to the cushions. The walnut frame shows scattered scratches, small dents, scuffs and surface marks, with some more visible traces of use to the legs and rear rail. These signs have been retained as part of the piece’s vintage character. The frame appears structurally sound. This piece has an attribution mark,
