This magnificent sketch, by Timoteo Pérez Rubio (1896-1977), depicts a female figure, Rosa Chacel, the painter's wife. She is shown seated, posing in a relaxed manner, with her right arm crossed and her left hand supporting her cheek. She wears a red dress that stands out against the black background, thus highlighting the figure. The brushstrokes are quick and undefined, giving the work a schematic appearance.
Rosa Chacel was a prominent Spanish writer, belonging to the Generation of '27 and associated with the renowned group known as "Las Sinsombrero" (The Hatless Ones). In her youth, she studied sculpture at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, though she abandoned her studies in 1918 without completing them. It was there that she met her future husband, Timoteo. Her literary career was remarkable; she wrote novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and memoirs, for which she received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts and the National Prize for Spanish Literature.
This work is particularly special due to its exclusivity and provenance, as it comes from the estate of the artist couple Timoteo Pérez Rubio and Rosa Chacel.
The author's career reveals a clear evolution, beginning with an early artistic style influenced by French Impressionism. This connection stems from a 1918 exhibition in Madrid, where he encountered the work of these artists, primarily Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Santiago Rusiñol. He later incorporated the new avant-garde trends he encountered during his time abroad, such as Cubism and Surrealism. Landscapes predominate in his work, although numerous portraits can also be found, such as those he painted of his wife, Rosa Chacel, and various acquaintances.
A native of Badajoz, he began his artistic training at the School of Arts and Crafts in his hometown. In 1915, he moved to Madrid to continue his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he received a landscape painting scholarship at the Paular School. It was there that he met his future wife, Rosa Chacel, whom he married in 1922. That same year, he went to Rome, affiliated with the Spanish Academy. His stay, which lasted until 1928, was crucial in his artistic development, establishing him as a great landscape painter in the style of the French Impressionists.
Upon his return to Spain, he joined the Second Society of Iberian Artists, where he introduced new avant-garde trends. This led to him winning his first medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1932 and becoming the assistant director of the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid in 1933. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he played a fundamental role in defending Spain's artistic heritage, overseeing the relocation of the most important works from Madrid, especially those from the Prado Museum, which were moved to Valencia and later to Geneva. This alignment with the Republican side led to his exile after the war ended. Timoteo settled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he continued his artistic work for the rest of his life. Years before his death, he returned to Spain in 1974, for the first and last time after his exile, to attend an exhibition of his work at the National Library.
