A striking matched pair of traditional African fertility dolls, carved in dark wood and densely sheathed in overlapping cowrie shells that form a continuous protective cloak over the torso. Excellent overall Condition.
Each figure stands in a wide, grounded stance with articulated limbs, red beadwork at the neck, wrists, and ankles, and small hanging leather or fiber elements at the arms and legs. The heads are stylized with simple facial features, metal rings, and small crest-like projections, giving the pair a quiet, watchful presence.
Cowrie shells have long carried associations with fertility, wealth, and protection across West and Central African traditions. Dolls of this type—often linked to Namji, Fali, or related Cameroonian practices, and sharing visual kinship with Yoruba ibeji figures—were traditionally created for young women as fertility symbols, carried, adorned, and cared for over time. The shells, red beads, and dark wood create a rich textural contrast that reads both sculptural and ceremonial.
Mounted on simple black rectangular bases, the pair measures approximately 11.5 inches tall. They weigh about 1.5 lbs each.
They make a powerful display as a matched set, whether placed on a mantel, shelf, or in a collection of ethnographic sculpture.
The surfaces show the natural aging and handling consistent with traditional wooden figures.
