The composition brings together harbour workers, families, boats and low maritime buildings in a tightly organised figurative scene. A standing male figure anchors the centre, while another worker handles a large rectangular crate or tray. At the left, a woman and child are surrounded by further figures, creating a broader image of everyday harbour life rather than an isolated depiction of manual labour.
Nielsen uses a restrained post-war palette of ochre, muted yellow, blue-grey and green. The figures and architecture are simplified into clear, economical forms, giving the work a strong Scandinavian modernist character while retaining warmth and social observation.
The lithograph is signed in pencil lower right, dated 1951 and numbered 127/260 lower left. “Harbour Workers” is a descriptive title used for clarity; no original artist-given title for this exact impression has been independently confirmed.
Helge Nielsen trained initially as a professional house painter before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1914–1916 and again in 1919–1920. In 1934 he co-founded the Danish artists’ association Kammeraterne and remained its chairman until 1963.
Around the mid-1930s Nielsen moved to Bornholm, whose distinctive light became an important influence on his tightly constructed, colour-conscious landscapes and figurative works. He became closely associated with Listed, a small coastal settlement on the island.
Nielsen also played a notable role in Danish cultural life. As an adviser to Julius Bomholt, he was a central figure in the establishment of Statens Kunstfond, the Danish Arts Foundation, in 1964. In 1952, one year after the present work was made, he received the Eckersberg Medal.
