The composition is organised around a large inverted triangular form constructed from repeated horizontal bands and layered collage elements. Black, red and warm ochre passages are interrupted by pale mint and off-white areas, producing a deliberately restricted, architectural structure.
At first glance the work appears highly geometric and controlled. At closer range, however, the physical surface becomes central: torn and layered paper edges, raised collage elements, irregular printed passages and visible overlaps disrupt the strict symmetry of the image.
This tension between geometric order and material fragmentation is characteristic of Håfström’s broader practice, which has repeatedly moved between abstraction and figuration and has encompassed painting, works on paper, sculpture, film and writing.
Jan Håfström was born in Stockholm in 1937 and studied at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1963 to 1968. He emerged during the 1960s and subsequently developed a highly individual visual language drawing on memory, cultural references, abstraction and recurring imagery.
Håfström represented the Nordic Pavilion at the 44th Venice Biennale in 1990, and his work has been presented extensively by Swedish institutions including Moderna Museet.
The work is signed and dated “Jan Håfström 1981” in pencil at the lower right and numbered 118/150 at the lower left.
Other impressions of this composition have appeared in Swedish auction catalogues under generic titles such as Untitled or Composition. The descriptive phrase “Inverted Triangle Composition” is used by Mind Blown Gallery solely for identification and is not presented as an artist-given title.
