Jørgensen is a Scandinavian painter born in Sweden in 1934 and closely associated with the Danish island of Bornholm. His work is characterised by highly textured surfaces, strong colour and imaginative interpretations of Nordic landscapes and coastal settings.
Documented works by Jørgensen repeatedly return to Bornholm subjects, including locations such as Dueodde and Jons Kapel. This painting is inscribed “Gudhjem Bornholm” on the reverse, identifying the town and island depicted.
The composition transforms Gudhjem’s clustered roofs, chimneys and hillside architecture into a compact modernist townscape. Rather than describing the village in precise topographical detail, Jørgensen constructs the scene through broad passages of paint, simplified architectural forms and a restrained palette of ochre, teal, terracotta, muted violet and cream.
The painted surface is particularly tactile, with visible brushwork and layered passages of pigment giving the work a strong physical presence. The result moves between landscape and abstraction while retaining a clear sense of place.
