This signed original oil painting by swedish artist rolf dalin is strongly aligned with the mature “light pictures” and “blue paintings” for which he became best known.
the composition is built around an unusually restrained balance. A low strip of landscape occupies only the lower part of the image: a green roofline, pale ground, scattered vegetation and a sharp red-orange accent. Above it, a broad field of cool blue-grey light is left almost completely open.
from a distance, the work reads as quiet and nearly minimal. At closer range, the lower landscape becomes much more physical, with dragged, wiped, scraped and layered passages of white, olive, yellow, violet and red.
dalin was born in malmö in 1934 and developed his career as a self-taught painter after approximately twenty-five years in the graphic industry. His mature work became particularly associated with the light and landscape of österlen in southern sweden, as well as malmö city scenes and more abstract compositions.
a period new art ab artist information sheet remains attached to the reverse. In a first-person statement on the sheet, dalin explains that his painting changed significantly after spending a summer in brantevik in 1983, where he became fascinated by the distinctive light of österlen. He describes moving towards lighter, fresher colour and increasingly simplified compositions in an attempt to capture that atmosphere as directly as possible.
the present painting is highly consistent with that mature direction, reducing the landscape almost to a horizon while allowing light and atmosphere to carry most of the image.
dalin exhibited extensively across southern sweden and stockholm, and biographical records note that his work is represented in malmö museum.
the painting is signed “dalin” at the lower left and presented behind glazing in a slim vintage silver-tone metal frame with a wide pale mount. The descriptive title “österlen light — scanian landscape” is used for cataloguing convenience; no documented original title has been confirmed. This piece has an attribution mark,
