Born in Køge, he initially trained in stone carving and sculpture before pursuing painting largely as a self-taught artist. He settled on the Danish island of Bornholm in 1938, which became an important source of landscape subjects throughout his career.
Nielsen travelled widely in Europe, including periods in Paris, Norway, Spain and the Netherlands, and also worked as a modeller and decorator for the Danish ceramic manufacturers Michael Andersen and Søholm. His work was shown in Denmark and abroad from the late 1930s onward, including exhibitions connected with Den Frie, Skive Museum, Bornholms Kunstforening, Karlshamn Konsthall and Ystad Art Museum.
This large oil on canvas depicts four rural workers within an expansive cultivated landscape. Nielsen builds the scene through broad, direct brushwork rather than precise : the dark foreground and simplified figures contrast strongly with luminous green fields, ochre trees, distant farm buildings and the expressive blue-grey sky. At close range, passages of the painting approach abstraction; viewed from a distance, the figures and landscape resolve into a coherent agricultural scene.
