The sitter is constructed through energetic passages of cobalt blue, ultramarine, black and pale blue. Rather than pursuing conventional likeness, Heinertz builds the face through angular planes, darkened eyes and rapidly applied brushwork, giving the portrait a concentrated psychological presence.
Areas of exposed canvas weave remain visible throughout the composition and form an active part of the image, particularly around the face, neck and background. The contrast between the raw textile surface and the dense blue-black passages gives the work an immediate, distinctly post-war character.
The painting is signed at the lower right.
A label on the reverse identifies the artist and medium in Swedish: “Erik Heinertz — Olja på duk”, confirming oil on canvas.
The work is presented in what appears to be its original period frame, combining a warm linen-textured surround with an aged silver-tone outer moulding. The restrained neutral framing provides a strong counterpoint to the cool blue palette of the painting.
