“Kalvar i landskap” (“Calves in a Landscape”) is an original oil on panel by Swedish painter Sigfrid Bengtsson (1898–1985), signed at the lower right and titled on the reverse.
The composition places three black-and-white calves within the gently rolling agricultural landscape of Skåne in southern Sweden. Bengtsson reduces the scene to broad, simplified areas of colour: deep green fields, yellow-green pasture, a subdued sky and a compact dark tree line. Small accents across the foreground animate an otherwise deliberately restrained composition.
Rural life, and cattle in particular, occupied an important place in Bengtsson’s work. Staffanstorps Konsthall devoted its 2022 summer exhibition to the artist under the title Komålaren Sigfrid Bengtsson, literally “Sigfrid Bengtsson, the cow painter”. The municipality described his work as closely connected to the surrounding countryside, agriculture, cattle, horses and the people of the local community.
Bengtsson studied at Skånska Målarskolan in Malmö and later at a painting school in Stockholm. The Swedish biographical reference Svenska konstnärer records him as a painter of broadly handled landscapes with figures, children, animals and flowers, and notes his representation in Malmö Museum and Ystad Museum. In 1980 he received Staffanstorp Municipality’s cultural prize.
According to Staffanstorp, Bengtsson produced close to 3,000 paintings during his lifetime. His professional career began comparatively late, around the age of 38, after encouragement from the chairman of Skånes konstförening to exhibit his work.
“Kalvar i landskap” is particularly representative of the artist’s established subject matter: cattle set within the rural landscape of southern Sweden. The work retains its handwritten title and artist name on the reverse, providing original documentation connected directly with the painting.
