Low rows of red, green and dark-roofed houses follow the edge of the water, while chimneys, towers and industrial structures dissolve into the distant skyline. A dense burgundy-green mass of trees closes the composition at the right, giving the otherwise open view a strong visual counterweight.
Larsson treats the city less as a precise topographical record than as an arrangement of colour, atmosphere and rhythm. The canal is reduced to a broad field of deep green, the buildings to compact blocks of muted colour, and the distant industrial architecture almost disappears into the hazy sky. The result has a distinctly restrained post-war Scandinavian character.
The work is signed “Egon Larsson” at the lower left and dated “-55”, indicating 1955.
Swedish auction records document further signed works by Egon Larsson with closely related urban and waterfront subjects, including a Malmö canal scene with the gasworks in the background, a 1952 view associated with Pildammsparken, and harbour subjects. The precise location depicted in the present painting has not been independently established and is therefore described by Mind Blown Gallery simply as a Swedish canal or waterfront cityscape.
Executed in oil on canvas and retained in its vintage gilt-toned wooden frame with a wide fabric liner and pale inner slip.
