“Southern European Woman” is a large signed and numbered colour lithograph by Swedish painter and graphic artist Bo Yson Sjöberg (1915–1994). This impression is hand-signed in pencil at the lower right and numbered 35/260 at the lower left.
The Swedish title “Sydeuropeisk kvinna” has been recorded for another impression of the same composition and is translated here as “Southern European Woman”.
The image centres on a solitary standing woman carrying a broad shallow basket filled with red fruit above her head. Sjöberg reduces the figure to a series of strong, almost architectural forms: the long dark dress creates a vertical axis through the centre of the composition, while the basket and the surrounding arch introduce broad curves and diagonals around her.
The palette is restrained but unusually effective. Muted blue-grey defines the monumental arch behind the figure, while warm ochre, red-orange and black give the image its structure and visual weight. Rather than describing the scene in detail, Sjöberg simplifies it into a small number of large colour areas, allowing the human figure and surrounding architecture to carry the composition.
The subject also fits naturally within Sjöberg’s wider artistic biography. Born in Stockholm in 1915, Bo Arvid Yson Sjöberg studied with Swedish artists Edward Berggren and Otte Sköld and continued his artistic education in Paris and London. Travel remained an important part of his practice, and documented working journeys took him through France, Spain, Italy, Greece, England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Yugoslavia, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Austria and the Scandinavian countries.
Southern European subjects therefore formed part of a much broader engagement with places encountered beyond Sweden. In this work, however, Sjöberg avoids picturesque detail. The woman is presented almost as a timeless, emblematic figure, set within a simplified architectural space rather than a precisely identified location.
Sjöberg developed an extensive exhibition history in Sweden. He exhibited in Stockholm at venues including Färg & Form, Galleri Lucas, Galleri Moderne, Mälargalleriet and Konstnärsfrämjandet. In 1946 he took part in an exhibition at Göteborgs Konsthall together with Anna-Lisa and Nils Bringfelt. His work was also shown in numerous Swedish museum and gallery contexts, as well as at the Danish Academy in Copenhagen.
His career received repeated institutional support. Sjöberg was awarded a French State scholarship in 1947, followed later by a Swedish State working scholarship, a Konstnärsnämnden grant and a Stockholm City merit scholarship. His work is documented in museum collections including those of Norrköping, Halmstad and Kalmar, alongside other Swedish public and private collections.
This lithograph demonstrates the direct, colour-led side of Sjöberg’s post-war figurative work particularly well. The simplified female figure, flattened architectural setting and broad passages of muted yet contrasting colour give the composition a distinctly mid-century European character while retaining an individual, expressive quality.
The work is presented in its vintage light-toned wooden frame under glazing. The overall framed dimensions are approximately 78 × 63 cm. The exact date of production has not been confirmed. This piece has an attribution mark,
