“Flicka” is an original gouache on paper by Danish-Swedish artist Christian Bjørn Larsen (1931–1993), signed and dated 1965.
The composition depicts a seated young girl defined by dark, economical linework against a layered field of orange, turquoise, blue, red and pale pastel tones. The stillness of the figure is set against a more active painterly ground, creating a restrained but distinctly expressionistic tension.
Larsen worked within the Scandinavian figurative tradition of the post-war period and repeatedly returned to the female figure throughout his career. Comparable auction records document seated girls, women and female portraits across several decades, including other works from the 1960s.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1931, Larsen was educated in Scandinavia, studying at Slöjdföreningens Skola in Gothenburg, at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. His exhibition history included Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus, Malmö, Sundsvall and Stockholm, as well as an exhibition at Die Brücke in Düsseldorf. Alongside his painting, he also worked as an illustrator.
In “Flicka”, the surface is built through visible brushwork, dry passages and layered colour, while the face, hair and hands are articulated with restrained graphic marks. The work is signed at the lower right and dated “65”.
A handwritten label on the reverse identifies the work as “Flicka”. The original backing also retains a period biography label relating to the artist and the original hanging system.
Presented behind matte glass in a textured bronze-gold vintage frame, which forms an integral part of the work’s current presentation. This piece has an attribution mark,
