“Three Chairs” (“Tre stolar”) is a signed and numbered color lithograph by Swedish painter, graphic artist and writer Lars Arvid Norrman (1915–1979).
The work is hand-signed in pencil by the artist and numbered 15/200. The Swedish title “Tre stolar” is also handwritten on the reverse.
The composition is striking in its restraint. Broad horizontal bands of deep navy blue, brown and warm ochre reduce the coastal landscape almost to abstraction, while three pale chairs and a small boat provide just enough detail to anchor the scene in the real world. Reflections are indicated with only a few simple marks, giving the image an unusually quiet and graphic character.
Norrman was an important figure in Swedish post-war art. He studied with Otte Sköld in Stockholm and later with Fernand Léger in Paris. His work frequently drew upon travel, landscape and everyday life, and maritime subjects had a personal relevance: his father was a ship captain and Norrman himself spent time at sea when young.
Travel became a recurring source of imagery throughout his career, including journeys to Greenland, North Africa, Brittany, Bulgaria and Central Asia. His first solo exhibition was held in Stockholm in 1936, and his work is represented in Swedish institutional collections including Nationalmuseum.
“Three Chairs” shows the quieter and more economical side of Norrman’s visual language. The simplified forms, restrained palette and strong horizontal construction give the work a distinctly Scandinavian modern character, while its coastal atmosphere also makes it particularly suited to relaxed contemporary, beach-house and New England-inspired interiors.
