The painting is signed at the lower right and bears an inscription on the reverse identifying the location as Bruges and dating the work to 1897.

Hazledine's confident, expressive brushwork is particularly evident in his treatment of the bridge's irregular stonework and the shimmering reflections in the canal. The restrained palette, softened atmospheric light, and loosely handled surfaces lend the painting an appealing Impressionistic quality, while its carefully structured composition reflects the artist's academic training.

A biographical label affixed to the reverse, written in Dutch, identifies Hazledine as a landscape painter and etcher who studied under Blanc-Garin and subsequently A. J. Heymans, the distinguished Belgian landscape painter. The label further notes that Hazledine worked in both Belgium and England and was admired for his fluent draftsmanship and pleasing use of color.

An evocative example of late 19th-century Belgian landscape painting, this work combines historical interest, painterly charm, and the enduring romantic appeal of Bruges, one of Europe's most picturesque medieval cities. See less
