Exquisite Charles II 17th Century Carved Oak S-Scroll Joined Joint Stool C.1660.
Constructed in solid oak using traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, the stool has a beautifully worn moulded rectangular top above deeply carved frieze rails decorated with flowing opposing S-scroll and foliate ornament. The carving continues around the sides, giving the piece considerable presence from every angle. The stool stands upon four boldly turned baluster and column legs, retaining their square lower blocks and united by substantial plain oak stretchers. The irregularities in the turning, softened carving, numerous old pegs and wonderfully worn surfaces are particularly attractive and contribute enormously to its character. The underside bears remnants of an old J. Tonks & Sons Ltd., Depository, Scarboro' paper label, providing an interesting fragment of the stool's later provenance. The piece has undergone various historic repairs and strengthening during its exceptionally long working life, including later supporting blocks beneath the seat, all forming part of its fascinating history. The piece has been deep cleaned, hand condition waxed and hand polished from top to bottom, whilst carefully retaining the wonderful centuries-old colour and patina. As can clearly be seen, there are numerous historic repairs, old losses, plugs, knocks, splits and areas of wear together with later strengthening beneath the seat, all entirely in keeping with a functional piece of furniture of this considerable age. There will naturally be age and use related patina marks consistent with honest use and transport. Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the around the condition.
