Herbst's revolutionary Sandows chair replaced conventional upholstery with tensioned elastic cord, creating one of the most recognisable designs of the French modernist movement. The chairs feature beautifully polished tubular chrome frames with contrasting black elastic cord seats and backs, secured by distinctive coiled metal attachments. Documented examples confirm this design as Herbst's Sandows chair, with later editions produced during the second half of the 20th century The set comprises six matching side/dining chairs, giving them a wonderfully uniform appearance when arranged around a dining table. The exposed construction is fundamental to Herbst's design: rather than concealing the chair's engineering, the repeated rows of elastic cord and their individual spring-like fixings become an integral part of the aesthetic. The result is an exceptionally clean and architectural design with strong associations with the European Modernist and Bauhaus movements. The chairs are presented in very good vintage condition, with the chrome retaining an excellent bright polished appearance and the black elasticated cords appearing clean and well tensioned. There are minor age-related marks and signs of use consistent with vintage furniture. A striking and increasingly collectable set of six chairs which would work beautifully within a contemporary, Art Deco, Bauhaus or modernist interior.
