Remarkable for their wonderfully unusual and highly sculptural form. Each stool is designed with enormous sweeping upholstered scroll ends which flow continuously down into the shaped supports and serpentine lower frame, creating an extraordinarily elegant silhouette. I have searched for this exact design and have not found a sufficiently close documented example to confidently attribute them to a particular maker, making their distinctive construction all the more interesting. The stools are upholstered throughout in wonderfully rich cognac-brown leather, with large, generously padded loose cushions and beautifully rolled ends. The entire outline of the sculptural framework has been painstakingly finished with individually hand-applied antiqued upholstery studs, following every curve and scroll and giving the pair tremendous decorative definition. Viewed from the side, front or above, the almost continuous flowing line of the frames makes these particularly striking pieces of Edwardian furniture. The pair have undergone a comprehensive professional restoration, with the leather carefully hand dyed, antiqued, waxed and sealed to create the deep tonal variation and wonderfully aged appearance seen today. The restoration has deliberately retained the character of antique leather rather than producing an overly new finish, resulting in a beautiful warm patina with subtle variations, creasing and character throughout. The frames have also been attended to and both stools are solid, substantial and ready for use.
