The thick rectangular oak top has a gently moulded edge and sits above plain frieze rails, the whole raised upon four wonderfully bold bobbin-turned supports terminating in substantial block feet and united by peripheral oak stretchers. The stool has developed a particularly attractive deep, warm colour and wonderfully aged patina, with the surface displaying the knocks, marks, variations and gentle wear acquired through generations of use. Particularly appealing are the worn top and stretchers, together with the exposed pegged joints and irregularities within the early oak, giving the piece the wonderfully honest character so desirable in early English country furniture. The underside and exposed construction further demonstrate its traditional hand-built character. Originally made as a practical household stool, pieces such as this are now increasingly appreciated as examples of early English vernacular furniture. Its compact proportions make it equally useful today as a fireside stool, occasional table or lamp table, while the strong bobbin turning gives it considerably more decorative presence than many plainer surviving joint stools of the period.
