An unusual and sculptural “Alien” table lamp designed by Luciano Cesaro for Tre Ci Luce in Italy during the 1970s. Characterised by its futuristic silhouette and carefully balanced geometric forms, the lamp is a distinctive example of Italian Space Age lighting, reflecting the experimental approach to materials, shapes and illumination that defined much of the country’s design during this period.
The design consists of a tall, conical black base supporting a wide, disc-shaped diffuser with an elegantly curved profile. The shade is formed by two opposing, gently domed elements that meet along a horizontal central seam, creating a flattened, almost flying-saucer-like silhouette. Its softly translucent surface allows the light to spread evenly, producing a warm, atmospheric glow while emphasising the sculptural qualities of the design.
A series of fine horizontal details accentuates the outer edge of the diffuser, adding a subtle technical character to the otherwise fluid form. The contrast between the solid black conical base and the softly illuminated shade is particularly effective, giving the lamp a sense of visual lightness despite its pronounced geometric composition. When illuminated, the diffuser appears almost suspended above the base, reinforcing the futuristic character suggested by its name.
Italian lighting design of the 1960s and 1970s was marked by a willingness to experiment with unconventional forms and new manufacturing possibilities. Designers increasingly approached lighting as an opportunity to create expressive objects that could function as both practical sources of illumination and sculptural elements within an interior. The “Alien” lamp reflects this approach, combining a playful, futuristic aesthetic with a carefully considered distribution of light.
with its distinctive silhouette and atmospheric illumination, the lamp works equally well as a decorative object when switched off and as an ambient light source when illuminated. Its compact dimensions make it particularly suitable for a side table, console or desk, where its unusual form can be appreciated from different angles.
