David Bautz was the son of civil servant Johan Carel Bautz and his wife Jacoba Kraamer. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where he was a student of Frits Jansen. He created paintings and etchings—including landscapes, portraits, and still lifes—and was influenced in his work by Willem van Konijnenburg. Bautz was a member of the Hague Art Circle and the Pulchri Studio. His works were presented in solo exhibitions, including at the De Protector art gallery in Rotterdam (1912,[4] 1914–1915), the Everts art gallery in Rotterdam (1923), and – posthumously – at the Genootschap Kunstliefde in Utrecht (1956). He received several awards, including the Vigelius Prize (1908), the large silver medal of the Prince of the Netherlands at the Exhibition of Living Masters in Arnhem (1909), a small gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Munich (1913), and a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco (1915).
Bautz gave private lessons and, from 1923, was a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam. His students included Piet van Boxel, Mies Callenfels-Carsten, Wim Chabot, Stien Eelsingh, Anton Geerlings, Jopie Goudriaan, Jan van Heel, Riemko Holtrop, Marius de Leeuw, Piet te Lintum, Kees Timmer, Fiep Westendorp, and Jan Wijsbroek.
David Bautz died at the age of 70 and was buried in the Nieuw Eykenduynen Cemetery.
