A tall, richly textured modernist painting of a gabled yellow house with a dusty blue-grey roof, set against a deep olive-charcoal ground and presented in a slim gold-tone floating frame. It measures 25 x 39 inches and is vintage, with a typed card on the back from Edmonton, Alberta. The artist is unconfirmed, so it is sold as unattributed.
THE PAINTING: This large vertical painting shows a narrow, gabled house built from flattened planes. It has an ochre-yellow façade, a dusty blue-grey roof and side wing, and pale cream trim around the windows and an open, shadowed doorway with steps. All of it sits against a deep olive-charcoal ground. The paint is laid on in thick, scraped layers, so the walls, window frames and roofline have real relief and change with the light through the day. The muted palette and simplified, almost architectural forms give it a quiet, slightly melancholy mid-century modernist feel. It would suit a living room, bedroom, entry or stairwell.
FRAME & SIZE: The oil on canvas is stretched on a wood stretcher and presented in a slim, gold-tone wood floating frame, which leaves a small gap around the canvas edge so the painting appears to hover within it. It measures 25 inches wide by 39 inches high and is wired on the back, ready to hang.
CONDITION: It is in good vintage condition with honest age. There is fine crazing in the yellow areas, a few tiny flecks of paint loss along the bottom dark band, light surface marks, and minor wear to the frame. The back of the canvas is aged and lightly stained. I see no tears or holes. Detail photos and a short video are available on request.
PROVENANCE & MARKINGS: The back carries several period markings:
- A vintage typed card reading “Miss Laura MacLaren Anderson, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada”, with an Edmonton address and a telephone number in an exchange-and-number style that suggests the 1950s–60s.
- “LAURA” painted in blue on the canvas.
- The number “2914” on the stretcher.
- A hand-inked monogram.
- The letter-plus-number phone format (GR7-2231) on the back of the painting suggests the piece dates to roughly the 1950s–60s.
