A commanding pair of Continental-style cast-brass candle sconces, combining crowned double-headed eagles, sculptural dragon-like ornament and distinctive open-frame candle sockets. Richly articulated feathers, deeply modelled relief and sweeping candle arms give these pieces an architectural presence suited to a panelled library, collected dining room or richly layered entry.
An unusual design seldom encountered in our research, this pair brings together a particularly distinctive combination of heraldic backplates, mythical creatures and open-frame candle fittings. No exact match or counterpart was located in our research, adding to its appeal for collectors seeking uncommon decorative lighting.
Each sconce is built around a broad eagle-shaped backplate. Two outward-facing heads rise beneath a single cross-topped crown, framed by upward-curving wings and individually delineated feathers. Talons and a descending feathered tail complete the silhouette.
At the centre, a twisted rope-like collar and decorative escutcheon anchor the projecting two-arm candle bracket. Paired dragon-like heads introduce another layer of sculptural detail, with pointed ears, open mouths and curling features. The curved arms extend to wide, shallow drip pans supporting unusual open-frame candle sockets. Upright metal strips, encircling rings and projecting tabs give these fittings their distinctive character.
Construction & Craftsmanship
The backplates exhibit substantial cast relief, with granular areas and pronounced directional tool marks visible on their reverse. These surfaces are consistent with castings subsequently dressed, filed or ground to refine their fit and finish. Sand casting is a plausible manufacturing method.
The workmanship is particularly engaging in the contrast between the broadly dressed reverse surfaces and the finer modelling of the front: feather divisions, crown ornament, twisted central collar and expressive creature heads. Visible finishing marks record work performed after casting, although the precise extent of hand-chasing on the decorative faces has not been established.
The candle-arm assemblies are separately attached to the backplates with screws. Three mounting holes on each eagle plate provide attachment points near the upper wings and lower tail. The pair retains candle fittings, with no electrical components visible.
Warm yellow brass and darker brown surface tones create visual depth across the feathers, ornament and candle fittings, emphasizing the relief and sculptural structure.
Symbolism & Historical Context
The crowned double-headed eagle belongs to a long European heraldic tradition associated with imperial authority. Its use by the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburg monarchy and Imperial Russia made it an enduring emblem of sovereignty across different regions and periods.
Here, the outward-facing heads and cross-topped crown lend the design an unmistakably armorial character. They evoke that broader imperial tradition without identifying a particular royal household or establishing a commission for one.
The dragon-like heads draw on the fantastic creatures found throughout Renaissance and later revival ornament. Such creatures could suggest guardianship and strength while also serving as expressive decorative supports. On this pair, they enrich the transition between the heraldic backplates and the functional candle arms.
The combination of armorial imagery, elaborate cast-metal ornament and mythical creatures is consistent with the Historicist taste that flourished in nineteenth-century Europe, when designers revisited Renaissance, Baroque and medieval decorative forms. A nineteenth-century Continental origin is proposed for this pair; the exact workshop, country and date remain unconfirmed.
Provenance
Acquired through a private collector's estate, where the pair was catalogued as "Cast Brass Double Eagle Heraldic Crest 2-Light Wall Sconces.”
The nineteenth-century attribution reflects subsequent examination of the design and construction alongside historical comparisons. Earlier ownership and a maker attribution have not been documented.
Placement
Their broad heraldic silhouettes make a striking arrangement flanking a portrait, antique mirror or architectural opening. The warm brass and mythical ornament complement oak panelling, dark mahogany, leather, tapestry and richly patterned textiles—particularly in English country, Tudor-inspired and traditional maximalist interiors.
