Large, rounded blush-pink forms sit in a field of saturated yellow and gold, each filled with clusters of small rings in navy, gray and white. A couple of the pink shapes are cropped by the edge, and a deeper rose circle at the top right is dense with black rings. The yellow is built in many layers, and drips and scrapes show through. The background yellow shifts from lemon to deep amber toward the edges. Goren often returns to circles and ovals as stand-ins for thoughts, and here the big shapes read as central ideas with smaller ones gathering around them. Bright, sweet and surprisingly bold.
A cheerful square for a kitchen, a dining area, a nursery, a bedroom or a corner with a vase and a chair. The yellow and pink go well with cream, sand, light wood, gray upholstery and soft linen, and the pairing is a good way to add color to a neutral room. It is a good size beside a bentwood chair or above a side table.
Encaustic (beeswax and pigment) on wood board, 24 x 24 x 1.5 in (61 x 61 x 3.8 cm). Unframed.
Rinat Goren works in encaustic, an ancient technique in which beeswax is melted, mixed with pigment, applied in layers and fused with heat. She began as a collage artist and still builds her surfaces with paper and drawn marks between the layers, so the wax becomes translucent and textured, with depth that glows from within. The work is made on a wood board and left unframed.
Rinat Goren was born and raised in Israel and now lives and works in Woodside, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. She studied physical therapy and interior design, and she committed to art as her full-time work after moving to California and raising a family. She began in collage, then worked in acrylic and mixed media on canvas, and has painted full time in encaustic since 2008.
Her layered paintings of figures, circles, grids and lines are inspired by the human capacity to think, decide and act with intention. Her solo exhibition Under the Surface was presented at the Peninsula Museum of Art in San Bruno in 2017, and her work is held in private collections across the United States, particularly in California.
