A sun-struck hillside of saffron yellow slants across a turquoise sky, with terracotta and rust fields tumbling below it in angular planes. Small tufts of green and blue dot the slopes, and a thin line of slate blue traces a ridge across the foreground. Even at nine by twelve inches the composition feels spacious, because Podolsky reduces the land to a few confident shapes and lets color do the work. Dry, scratchy strokes across the yellow slope suggest furrows or wind, and the whole canvas has the warmth of a high-summer afternoon in hill country. A few strokes of blue tuck into the shadows of the slope.
A small, bright accent for a bookshelf, a desk, a powder room or a wall of mixed sizes. The turquoise and saffron lift neutral rooms and pair well with warm wood, white walls and green plants. Lean it on a shelf or hang it in a cluster with larger works, where its saturated color gives a cheerful, compact focal point.
Oil on canvas, 12 x 9 x 1 in (30.5 x 22.9 x 2.5 cm). Signed with initials in the lower corner.
Miguel Podolsky paints in oil on stretched canvas, and in his more abstract work he reduces landscape to broad planes, bars and facets of saturated color. Strokes overlap, scrape back and leave thin passages where the canvas weave shows through. The structure behind each picture comes from his decades as an architect, a sense of proportion and balance that keeps the freer brushwork orderly. Each canvas carries his monogram, MP, in a lower corner.
Miguel Podolsky is an Argentine-born artist based in California. For more than thirty-five years he worked as an architect, a career that continues to shape his painting through a strong sense of composition, proportion and spatial balance. He is a contemporary impressionist who carries a sketchbook with him and paints whenever there is a chance.
His oil paintings explore light, color and atmosphere across landscapes, seascapes, urban scenes and vintage cars, often finding harmony between the built and natural worlds. Drawing on his South American roots and his many years in the United States, he paints scenes of the California coast, the Caribbean and beyond with a warm, optimistic eye for everyday moments.
