The Tale of the Armless Goddess
When this masterpiece was carved out of Parian marble around 100 BC, she wasn’t plain white, and she wasn't armless. She was a vibrant Hellenistic goddess, originally painted in rich pigments, glittering with gold jewelry, and proudly holding both of her arms.
Then came the spring of 1820 on the Aegean island of Milos. A local Greek peasant farmer named Yorgos Kentrotas was digging through ancient ruins looking for stone blocks to build a wall on his farm. Instead, his shovel struck two large pieces of sculpted marble buried inside a hidden niche.
A young French naval officer named Olivier Voutier, who happened to be docked on the island and exploring nearby, witnessed the discovery. Recognizing its incredible artistic mastery, he immediately alerted the French consul.
The Great Maritime Skirmish
What followed was a literal battle for her possession. The French rushed to secure the statue, but Turkish authorities representing the local government also demanded it, attempting to load her onto a ship bound for Constantinople. According to legendary historic accounts, a chaotic scuffle broke out right on the island's rocky beach between French sailors and Turkish officials.
During the rough, desperate tug-of-war to pull her onto the French boat, both of her fragile marble arms were violently snapped off and lost into the Aegean surf. The French won the battle, sailed away with their prize, and presented her to King Louis XVIII, who permanently installed her as a premier masterpiece in the Louvre.

In keeping with its aged, faux-stone character, the piece exhibits minor signs of vintage wear that enhance its authentic look. Notably, there is a light, superficial surface scratch on the upper left side of her back (as shown in detail photos) and minor, negligible chipping along the bottom rim of the integrated rustic plinth base. Structurally sound, stable, and exceptionally solid. less
