A broad, pale sky opens above an arrangement of fragmented horizons and sweeping planes. Blue-grey, muted green, ochre and warm earth tones are interspersed with terracotta, soft peach and mauve. A thin, broken line marks the distant horizon, while diagonal passages draw the eye through the foreground.

Rather than describing a specific location, the composition evokes the impression a landscape leaves behind: changing light, a sense of distance and the relationships between land, water and sky. The title, What Lingers, reflects this attention to what remains in memory after the view itself has passed.

Successive layers of oil paint, worked with palette knife and brush, create variations between broad, softly blended areas and more textured passages. Scraping and partial concealment allow earlier colours to emerge, giving depth to the luminous palette.
