A striking example of American Mid-Century Modern entertaining design, this sculptural stainless steel and teak chafing dish is attributed to Ernest Sohn, known for his sophisticated modernist tabletop and serving accessories.
The architectural design features a gleaming stainless steel vessel with a broad, gently conical lid crowned by an unusually sculptural, turned-teak finial. An elongated teak side handle complements three dramatically tapered teak tripod legs with contrasting metal feet. Beneath the vessel, an exposed circular burner assembly completes the distinctive Atomic Age silhouette.
The interplay of polished stainless steel, warm teak, and slender architectural supports captures the elegance and optimism of early 1960s American design.
Of particular historical interest, closely corresponding chafing dish designs appear in period Ernest Sohn advertising, including a 1964 advertisement featuring chafing dishes and fondue servers. A remarkably similar tripod chafing dish is also illustrated on the cover of The Second Chafing Dish Cookbook by Marie Roberson Hamm, published in 1963.
Although unsigned, the close correspondence in construction, materials, and proportions supports an attribution to Ernest Sohn. The distinctive architectural teak lid finial may represent a variation of the documented design.
Complete with its original components and beautifully preserved, this chafing dish is both an elegant example of vintage entertaining ware and a sculptural decorative object. A wonderful addition to a Mid-Century Modern dining room, bar, or collection of American industrial design.
