An impressive pre-Columbian Gran Nicoya (Papagayo style, ca. A.D. 800–1350) polychrome terracotta bowl featuring intricate slip-painted iconography in deep rust-red and manganese black over a hand-burnished buff slip. The interior basin centers on a bold concentric medallion framed by stylized zoomorphic imagery (avian/serpent motifs) and dual geometric step-fret and guilloche borders.
Measuring 10.5" in diameter by 2.5" in height, the slight ~1/4" organic variation across the rim reflects authentic hand-built coil construction.
CONDITION: Beautifully preserved with professional conservator reassembly. Fractured original sherds are tight-fitted along clean fracture lines without heavy overpainting. Features genuine age-appropriate surface wear, minor edge paint loss, and natural slip patination throughout. An extraordinary display piece. Ships double-boxed.
Note on Origin & Provenance: Acquired from a Northern California estate collection. Offered as an antique/ancient artifact based on visual analysis, hand-built coil construction, and period-appropriate polychrome slip technique. No formal academic documentation or prior provenance records accompany this piece. Please evaluate photos for condition and stylistic details prior to purchase.
