For your consideration is an exquisite, authentic original mid-century monochromatic figure drawing by the noted Mexican-American Surrealist and Magic Realism master, Alexander Cañedo (1902–1978).
Dating from his highly collectible California studio era (circa 1940s–1950s), this "Female Figurative Study" is executed beautifully in white Conté crayon on a textured blue artist paper. Cañedo masterfully utilizes classical chiaroscuro techniques, allowing the luminous anatomy of the female profile and torso to emerge gracefully from the dark negative space of the sheet.
Unlike his more common vertical portraits, this artwork is rendered in a highly desirable, rare landscape (horizontal) orientation—making it the ultimate statement piece to sit beautifully above a mid-century modern credenza, mantel, or media console.
Archival Presentation & Framing:
This original drawing has been newly housed in a satin black wood gallery frame. The framing was assembled using specific conservation materials to ensure the long-term preservation of the vintage sheet:
Glazing: Hand-cut standard art glass.
Matting: Single-layer Super White 4-ply acid-free gallery mat board window.
Mounting: The artwork is suspended via a fully reversible top-edge hinge mount using Lineco archival linen tape, allowing the paper to expand naturally without buckling.
Backing: Supported by a rigid, 3/16" acid-free foam backing board.
Dust Seal: Sealed completely to the reverse of the frame molding using Lineco framing tape. Pre-wired and ready to hang.
Condition & Transparency Statement:
Artwork Medium: Excellent vintage condition. The white Conté crayon pigment remains structurally stable, vibrant, and completely crisp against the paper substrate with no signs of active smudging or lifting.
Paper Substrate: Excellent structural state. The sheet is entirely free of tears, foxing, water stains, or buckling. Reflecting its vintage mid-century history, the toned blue paper features uniform, light age-toning across the viewable area. A natural mat margin line is present along the unexposed perimeter edges beneath the mat board, consistent with the artwork's legacy framing history and verifying its authentic period chronology.
Frame & Glazing: Brand new, clean, and ready to hang immediately.
