Top & Drop-Leaves Look across the mahogany top for water rings, cup halos, or clouding in the lacquer finishing. Note any fine surface scratches vs. deep gouges that penetrate the wood grain. Check if the leaves sit flat or sag when raised. Cosmetic Impact: Shallow scratches are "age-appropriate wear." Deep rings or wood gouges downgrade the piece to "Good" condition. Metal Registry Plates Check both the rectangular brass Baker Furniture plate and the oval Historic Charleston Registry medallion on the underside. They must be firmly attached with their original screws and legible. Provenance Check: Intact, legible tags are highly valued by curators.
